Podcast Recording - Air Marshal Anil Chopra & Vinamre Kasanaa
Date: August 22, 2026
A long-form podcast conversation between Vinamre and Air Marshal Anil Chopra, a retired fighter and test pilot. Wide-ranging discussion spanning sport and parenting, adventure flying, a Mirage 2000 ejection, fighter jet generations, the India-China Himalayan equation, the Pakistan Air Force and the China-Pakistan nexus, India’s squadron gap, the LCA Tejas and HAL, the Kaveri engine, and civic discipline.
Sport, Leisure & Parenting Philosophy
- The Air Marshal’s father was captain of the Indian basketball team at the first Asian Games and later coached the national team; basketball rings were mounted throughout their home.
- He joined Sainik School Kapurthala at age 8.5, then the National Defence Academy (NDA) - sport was mandatory from day one: cross-country, obstacle races, athletics.
- Framework for sport: physical fitness, mind-body coordination, and (for team sports) teamwork and collective values.
- Sport progression tracked rank: squash as a young officer → tennis as a senior officer → golf as an Air Marshal. The current Air Chief Marshal still runs marathons.
On parenting:
- Dropped children into a swimming pool with a coach; job done only when they could swim in deep water - their children now swim too.
- Enrolled them at the Delhi Riding School; when they fell off, told them to get back on immediately.
- Philosophy: “Don’t put pressure, don’t push it down the throat - give them exposure and let them enjoy it.”
- Elder daughter (a journalist) played golf and hosted Tea Time with Sherry Chopra, combining golf with conversations with industry and government leaders.
- Observed that grandchildren’s schedules are now overloaded - school, homework, music, football, non-stop. His counter: focused, time-bound exposure beats cramming everything simultaneously.
Leisure, Passion & the Productization of Pursuits
- Vinamre raised Leisure: The Basis of Civilization - arguing active leisure done for its own sake (riding, bridge, cricket) is foundational to civilisation.
- Both agreed that doing things with a motive (content, status, club access) robs them of innate joy.
- The Air Marshal’s counter-principle: passion and inclusion - love what you do, get into the profession you would love. Referenced Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and 3 Idiots.
- On paperwork in the Air Force: honest acknowledgment that nobody enjoys it, but log books and debrief records are essential for expensive assets (Mirage 2000 ground infrastructure runs to ₹1,500 crores). Modern 3D debrief tools have digitised much of this.
Civilian Adventure Sports - What’s Accessible
- Parasailing: widely available at beaches and hill stations (Himachal, Uttarakhand) across India; tandem, with a life jacket.
